Poor Pet

Bug = 2 years 6 months
Bub = 8 months 29 days

Linus: I found a spider on the dining table.

Daddy: Really? Did it have shoes?

Linus: No.

Daddy: Did it have socks?

Linus: No.

Daddy: Did it have a little hat?

Linus: Yes…

Daddy: Oh, a little hat!

Linus (solemnly): I think you’re teasing me.

In Public and Private

Public Loo

I was very proud of Linus and myself today: we aced* our first public toilet use. We were at the Edgar Centre, and when we arrived I put Ada in the buggy and we took Linus to the toilet. He did wees in the toilet, then – by team effort – we flushed the toilet and washed and dried his hands.

It was very satisfying to manage all this on my own, and it was even better when an hour or so later Linus came up to me and told me he needed to go again… the repeat performance also went like clockwork!

Nap Happenings

For the past few naps, I’ve given Linus the choice of staying in undies or putting on a nappy, and he usually chooses undies, so I put him to bed with undies on and a potty in his room.

He’s having quite a lot of “no naps” at the moment, that is, he stays happily in his room for as long as I leave him there (even a couple of hours!), but refuses to sleep. I’m not sure if having no nappy is causing this, but it’s definitely exacerbating it. I usually have to go in a few times over the hour to get his undies back on him and empty the potty. (I could just leave him if he’s only done wees, I suppose, but definitely not when he’s done poos.)

I hope he’s not giving up on his sleep, but I’m counting myself lucky that he’s so content to stay in his room – causing only mild havoc – until I finally decide it’s a lost cause and begrudgingly release him from his cage room.

* The one hiccup was that after deporting himself perfectly for the peeing element of the procedure, Linus stuck his hands hard up under the tap and managed to get his clothes and the floor soaking wet! Still, water-soaked is preferable to wee-soaked.

Toilet Training Well Underway

Bug = 2 years 6 months
Bub = 8 months 23 days What was Linus up to at this age?

Linus is well on his way to being toilet trained. Last time I reported on progress three months ago, he was peeing consistently in his potties (we have three so that we’ve got good coverage of the house!) and had just managed his first poo in one.

Now virtually every waking pee and poo at home is in the potty (with no more than one or two accidents a week), and Linus wears underwear instead of a nappy. We have a toilet seat insert that Linus sits on before bed, so in the near future we might work on encouraging him to use this at other times of the day as well. I think the adult toilet seat is still too big for him, and he clings on and looks nervous if we try to sit him on that (I don’t blame him!).

Out and About

In the past month we’ve been making more and more trips out with Linus in undies. At first, it was short car trips to Nana’s or Granny’s, and I made sure to tell Linus that we were taking a potty in the car and he should tell me if he wanted us to stop so he could “go”. During these trips so far I think there’s been one accident only – and that was because I let him sit in the car in the driveway for twenty minutes when we got home. (Yes, “let” him! He’s going through a phase of wanting to stay in the car!)

He Makes Us So Proud

The last couple of times we’ve been to Storytime at the library we’ve also gone nappy-free. Last week Linus wet his pants and I had to change him. Today was an improvement – Linus apparently (so Daddy tells me) stood beside the story pit (alongside 91 assorted children and caregivers) and pulled down his pants. Daddy saw him do it and raced around past a bookshelf to get to him, to be told unsurprisingly that “I want to do wees”, so the two of them disappeared to the toilet.

I haven’t taken Linus to a public toilet myself yet (unlike Daddy, who’s done it lots of times), but I am at least getting used to making sure to have one or two changes of undies, trousers, and – yes – socks on me at all times.

Sleeps

Linus is still wearing nappies for naps and his overnight sleep, but I expect in the next few weeks I’ll brave the “no-nappy” nap. (I imagine he wakes up dry from naps, but I don’t know for sure – he’s too grumpy after naps for me to remember to check the nappy!)

Friends

Yesterday SSO stayed for a nap in Linus’s bed after Linus had finished his nap. When she got up, she was quite grizzly (just like Linus usually is after a nap). She was lying on the floor waiting for her mummy to change her nappy, and she was moaning and verging on tears, her little lip quivering. Linus came over to her on his knees and said, “It’s OK, SSO!”, just like he does to Ada when she’s crying.

That was sweet, but the best bit was that SSO then reached out her arms to Linus and they had a little hug.

RH and I just looked at each other as cartoon bluebirds, butterflies and rainbows danced around the room!

All Rise

Pulling Herself UpBug = 2 years 6 months
Bub = 8 months 23 days What was Linus up to at this age?

Movements (Don’t worry, not THAT sort!)

Ada is coming along in figurative leaps and bounds with her crawling. She’s quick (at least when I use my car keys as bait!), and she seems to be losing the unusual tuck-under that made her initial crawling so distinctive.

And as of Sunday, she has another new move – pulling herself to standing. No coffee-table, couch, or clothes hamper is safe!!

Smile v2.0

In the past couple of days she also seems to have gotten cuter – she’s started smiling huge, squinty grins, some even accompanied by a huffing in and out through her noise which faintly resembles what we humans might call a “laugh“.
