She Rolled Again

Bug = 2 years 2 months
Bub = 4 months 10 days

A couple of weeks ago Ada rolled for the first time, and this afternoon she did it again. Nana put Ada down for some tummy time, and almost as soon as Nana had stepped back, Ada had rolled over. Nana told me what had happened, then rectified the baby’s position – and Ada promptly rolled over to the other side. Show-off!

Measuring Up

Measuring AdaBug = 2 years 2 months
Bub = 4 months 4 days

I’ve mentioned this before, but thought I’d do it again for any parents who are interested.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has a piece of free software that you can use for tracking the basic measurements and motor development of your child. The software seems to be targeted at health workers in the third world, but it’s a simple-to-use way to track your child’s growth.

The bonus is that the software has built into it the WHO growth standards so that you can see where your child fits in. The “new” growth standards are based on a worldwide survey of exclusively breastfed infants (as the biological norm), rather than on charts that include a substantial number of artificially-fed infants (such as the current New Zealand Plunket charts).

Ada Sucking her ThumbThumb-Sucking

Ada has recently become very good at sucking her thumb, particularly when going to sleep. She seems to favour the left one.

She’s an excellent sleeper already, so if thumb-sucking becomes a big comfort for her I might have trouble ever waking her up!

Oops!

I went out with Linus and Ada yesterday, and it was raining, so I put Ada in her car seat – telling myself I must remember to come back and buckle her in – then went around to strap Linus in so he wouldn’t run all over the garden and get wet.

It wasn’t until we were a few kilometres down the road that I remembered that I’d never gone back and strapped Ada in. Scary! :(

Rolls

One big difference between Ada and Linus at the same age is that Ada has a lot more flesh on her bones. The other day I happened to lift her chin (well, one of them!) and discovered that she had a very red (and smelly) area on her neck. Even when she’s all wet, soapy, and relaxed in the bath, it seems she still holds her head so it’s difficult to clean the area.

Linus never had many creases or rolls around his neck or thighs, so I’ll have to get be more vigilant with cleaning these areas on Ada.

Chatterbox

It seems over the past week that Ada has become a big chatterbox! She babbles away to us and to her toys at the drop of a hat. It’s very cute!

Put In My Place

I was talking to Mummy this morning when Linus came up to us and started saying “Daddy, Daddy…”. I turned to him and said “Yes, sweetheart?”, to which he promptly replied “No talking please Daddy”. I was left with my mouth open, speechless!

Baby Led Weaning

Bug = 2 years 2 months
Bub = 4 months

At a parenting group I was at last week, a friend presented information about baby led weaning. I wasn’t aware of what the term meant, but I’m keen on trying it with Ada.

I won’t go into too many details on here – the Baby Center page on the topic is excellent! – but in summary, baby led weaning is about letting babies move from milk onto solids at a pace that suits their physical development. This means that rather than being fed purees on a spoon, babies eat what they can pick up, hold, bite, chew, swallow themselves.

As with Linus, I don’t plan to start Ada on solids until she’s around 6 months old, so I’ll keep you posted.
