Songs of the Moment

Adies

Bug’s current favourite songs are Morningtown Ride and Daisy Bell.

Morningtown Ride is a favourite from Daddy at bedtime… as soon as Bug has had one book, he says “song”, gets into bed, and then says “morning”.

Daisy Bell (you know the one… “Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do…”) is cute because, as with most songs and poems he knows well, Bug can easily fill in the last word of every line for you. For this song, Bug’s unique accent mean that “It won’t be a stylish orange, I can’t afford an orange“.

And I can’t mention songs without mentioning his absolute favourite – “Adies“. “Adies” is the way Bug refers to the CD (and accompanying picture book) that he has at Granny and Pop-pop’s. The CD and book are called “Wee Sing and Learn ABC“, and each letter is represented by a short song/picture featuring a name, animal and instrument, e.g. “Carla the cat plays the clarinet”.

Bug LOVES the music, so much so that we’ve been forced to get it for him here at home. It’s amazing the way he can sit still in the lounge through the entire CD. We try to not play it too much, but it’s a godsend for occasionally bribing or silencing him (like when I’m on the phone). It’s also got quite a few interesting instruments and animals in it. Educate yourself by learning about the ney, the idi, the xenops, the quena, the yueh chin, and the upland sandpiper.

Tourette Syndrome

Bug seems to have a very funny variant of Tourette Syndrome at the moment. He’ll be quietly walking along or eating his tea, when suddenly he’ll blurt out “Mummy! Daddy! Ada! Linus! Ada!” or “Hippo! Neigh! Lion! Zebra! Elephant!”.

Naming People

Bug has also managed to learn a few names lately. He has known for a while that Daddy is “Bob” and Mummy is “Linda”, and has reportedly referred to Pop-pop as “Keith” on occasion (probably mimicking Granny). On top of this, Nana has been looking after RR full-time lately and spending a lot of time with me and the kids, and because RR calls Nana “Brenda”, Bug has also picked it up. He seems a little obsessed with the word “Brenda”… he doesn’t use it to call Nana yet, he just says it frequently and looks very satisfied when we confirm that it means Nana.

Other Words

  • There it is
  • Come here (only copying us, not with any meaning)
  • Sorry
  • Thank you (which comes out as just “you”, so doesn’t sound very grateful yet)
  • Please
  • Hello and Hi
  • Asleep and Awake

And of course he says “Mummy”, but this seems to wander haphazardly between “Mummy”, “Mama”, and “Mommy” (!).
